The Federal Pell Grant is the primary grant program available to undergraduate students—those who have completed high school or earned a GED—who demonstrate exceptional financial need through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Eligibility is determined by the U.S. Department of Education based on the Student Aid Index (SAI) and other federal eligibility criteria.
For the 2025–2026 academic year, the maximum Pell Grant award is $7,395 for students who are enrolled full-time, qualify for the maximum amount, and are taking courses that apply toward their declared program of study. Awards are prorated for students enrolled less than full-time. Unlike a loan, a Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid except under certain circumstances.
Students must complete and submit the FAFSA each year—beginning October 1—to determine continued eligibility for the Pell Grant and other forms of financial assistance.
