Courses
CY 104/CHEM 12104: Chemistry I for Health Sciences: Introduction to Chemistry (fall semester)
CY 113/CHEM 11353: General Chemistry (Selected Topics)
A lecture course covering the subject matter of the first semester of general chemistry. No laboratory practice is required. This course offering is contingent upon a 19 on ACT and enrolled or have taken, MS 123/MATH 11003 (MATH 1103), College Algebra, prior approval of both instructor and Dean.
CY 114/CHEM 14104: General Chemistry I
General Chemistry I covers the basic principles of chemistry with emphasis upon stoichiometry, periodic properties of the elements and the correlation between electronic configurations of the elements and these properties. The laboratory emphasizes both the qualitative and quantitative aspects of chemistry. Corequisites for this course are college algebra (MS 123/MATH 11003 (MATH 1103)) and applied mathematics for students of science (MS 213/MATH 21373).
CY 123/CHEM 12353: General Chemistry (Selected Topics)
A lecture course covering the subject matter of the second semester of general chemistry. No laboratory practice is required. This course offering is contingent upon prior approval of both instructor and division dean.
CY 124/CHEM 14204: General Chemistry II
General Chemistry II is a continuation of CY 114/CHEM 14104 (CHEM 1414). This course treats in detail the states of matter, the energy relationships involved in physical and chemical changes, equilibrium and kinetics. The laboratory emphasizes quantitative analysis.
CY 134/CHEM 10004: Chemistry I for General Education/Non Majors
This survey course introduces Chemistry as it applies to the real world. Includes basic topics of scientific method, measurement, states of matter, atomic structure, periodic table, chemical properties, and chemical reactions. Appropriate for general education. Not appropriate for science majors. Lab required. This is an algebra-based chemistry course and it is strongly recommended that the student should have completed College Algebra with a “C” or better.
CY 204/CHEM 12204: Chemistry II for Health Sciences: An Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry (spring semester)
Chemistry II for Health Sciences: An Introduction to Organic and Biochemistry is a one-semester survey course treating simple nomenclature, the chemical and physical prop-erties of organic compounds and the structure and function of the major classes of physiologically important compounds. This course is designed to give students of health sciences a basic knowledge of organic and biochemistry. A text that combines inorganic, organic and biochemistry is used. Some knowledge on the part of the student of inorganic chemistry is assumed.
CY 213/CHEM 21353: Organic Chemistry (Selected Topics)
CY 214/CHEM 21454: Organic Chemistry
A unified course designed to provide the student with a knowledge of aliphatic and aromatic carbon compounds. Their nomenclature, classification, derivatives, and general reactions are emphasized.
CY 223/CHEM 22353: Organic Chemistry (Selected Topics)
A continuation of CY 213/CHEM 21353, emphasizing structure-reaction relationship and mechanistic pathways. There is no laboratory requirement for this course.
CY 224/CHEM 22454: Organic Chemistry
A continuation of CY 214/CHEM 21454, emphasizing structure-reaction relationships and mechanistic pathways.
